いわせる【言わせる】

1 〔言うようにしむける〕 get sb to say sth.

●世間をあっと言わせたい. I want to shock [impress] people. | I want to stop people in their tracks.

・頑固親父をうんと言わせるにはどうしたらいいか. How can I get my stubborn father to say yes?

・その土地に 80 年生きてきたじいさまの勘がそう言わせるのだった. Having lived in that place for eighty years, the old man's intuition told him that it was so.

・それを私に言わせるの? Do I have to tell you that? | Do you need me to tell you that?

・専門家に言わせると, それは間違いだそうだ. The expert's opinion is that it was a mistake.

・そこで有無を言わせずサインさせてしまえば, こっちのもんよ. So then if you get them to sign regardless of whether they want to or not, then that's one for us.

2 〔言うにまかせる〕 let sb have his say.

●言わせておく let sb have his say; let sb speak (out)

・私に言わせれば in my (own) opinion; according to my view; from my point of view

・言わせておけばつけあがって! Don't think you can get away with saying (just) anything you like! | How dare you take advantage of me and say things like that?

・言いたい奴には言わせておけ. Let the bastards say whatever they want.

・言いたいことがあるなら言わせてやれ. If he has anything to say, let him speak out.

・〔反論して〕 じゃあ, 言わせてもらうけど. Excuse me. If I could just say something for a moment. | Excuse me. Let me say something.

・私の経験から言わせてもらうと, 一人前になるには 10 年はかかる. Speaking from my own experience, I'd say it takes ten years to become proficient.

・ひとこと言わせてもらいますが. I'd just like to say something here.

●そうは言わせない. I won't let you say that.

・もうだれにも文句を言わせない. I won't have anybody complaining to me anymore.

・知らないとは言わせないぞ. You can't just say you don't know.

3 〔音をたてる〕 make a sound.

●フォークやスプーンをがちゃがちゃ言わせないで食べなさい. Eat without clattering your spoon and fork.

・ランドセルをがたがた言わせながら息子が帰ってきた. My son came home with his satchel clattering.

4 〔効果を発揮させる〕
